Information for parents and carers

We provide free counselling for children and young people in Hertfordshire. Our service is for those aged 5 to 19 who are registered with a Hertfordshire GP.

Counselling can be one-to-one or in a group, and sessions take place in person or online, depending on what suits your child best.

When needed, a counsellor will contact you at the referral or assessment stage to gather important information and answer any questions you have.

Who your child will work with

Our counsellors are fully qualified and registered with professional bodies like the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) or UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

They are experienced in working with children and young people and use different approaches based on their training and what each young person needs.

Supporting your child in counselling

Here are some ways you can help your child during counselling:

  • Encourage them to attend their sessions, offering reassurance and practical help like reminding them of appointments and arranging transport if needed
  • Be aware of their needs after sessions, giving them space or support depending on how they feel
  • Let them choose whether to share details of their sessions—being gently curious can show interest without pressure
  • Respect their privacy if they prefer not to talk about their sessions

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is a key part of counselling. Counsellors will not share what your child says in their sessions with you. However, your involvement may vary depending on your child’s age and preferences.

We value the role of parents and carers and understand how well you know your child. There will be structured check-ins during your child’s counselling so you can review their progress with their counsellor.

If we believe your child is at risk of harm, we will follow safeguarding procedures, which may mean breaking confidentiality to contact you and keep your child safe.
